Tamron has released firmware updates for two of its full-frame Sony E-mount lenses. The Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD (A071) and Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD (A058) lenses benefit from improved autofocus after the update.
28-200 mm lens
The Tamron 28-200mm F/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD was the first all-in-one zoom lens to feature a wide maximum aperture of F/2.8. Though this is only at 28 mm it’s still a great bonus for shooting in low light. The 28-200mm lens can also focus down to 7.5 inches (19 cm) at 28 mm and 31.5 inches (0.8 m) at 200 mm. In addition, the autofocus system uses an RXD motor unit for accurate, smooth and quiet focusing.
35-150 mm lens
The Tamron 35-150mm F/2-2.8 Di III VXD zoom lens has an even wider maximum aperture range. Although the focal length range is reduced, the maximum apertures are kept wider across that range. In addition, the close focus distances are a respectable 13 inches (33 cm) at 35 mm and 33.5 inches (80 cm) at 150 mm. The VXD linear motor focus mechanism also suppresses drive noise and vibrations during focusing, making it ideal for video.
Firmware update
After updating, the firmware is version 4 for the 28-200 mm lens and version 3 for the 35-150 mm lens. For both lenses, Tamron says that the update improves AF tracking performance when shooting moving objects. Importantly, the update notes also state that the improved performance is compatible with the AF Assist function during video recording.
What we think
The Tamron 28-200mm and 35-150mm lenses are great all-rounders for video shooters. They give you a wide zoom with the added bonus of good low-light performance. Now with the firmware updates the autofocus is even better when filming moving subjects. If you have either of these lenses, you should update your firmware as soon as you can.

The firmware updates for the 28-200 mm and 35-150 mm lenses are available to download now from the Tamron website. To update the 35-150 mm lens you can use your computer and the Tamron Lens Utility. However, you will need to use your camera to update the 28-200 mm lens.
