SIGMA has revealed more details about the upcoming release of its SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports lens. The new full frame lens will be available with Leica L-Mount and Sony E-mount options.

SIGMA development announcement

The SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports is a large-aperture zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras. SIGMA issued a development announcement for the new lens at the beginning of October. However, the company only gave brief details of the specifications. The 70-200mm lens is designed for still and video use, with HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) high-speed autofocus. It also features an optical stabilizer with the latest “OS2” algorithm. In addition, the lens seems to deliver the expected weather resistance of the SIGMA Sports line.

The new SIGMA len’s optical construction

Since the initial announcement, SIGMA has used social media posts to tease more details of the new lens’s specifications. One of these posts gave details of the optical construction. The SIGMA 70-200 mm lens is constructed with 20 elements in 15 groups. These include six FLD (“F” ultra-low dispersion) elements, two SLD (special low dispersion) elements and three aspherical elements. In addition, the new lens has a constant F2.8 aperture across the zoom range.

Build

The social media posts also have details of the size and weight of the new 70-200 mm lens. The L-mount version weighs 47.4 ounces (1345 g) while the Sony E-mount version is a tad lighter at 47.1 ounces (1,335 g). Both versions of the lens are 3.6 inches (90.6 mm) in diameter and 8.1 inches in length. Confusingly, SIGMA also gave the lengths in metric as 205 mm for the L-mount and 207 mm for the E-mount options. In addition, the filter size is 77 mm.

What we think

The SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports lens promises to be great for video. The constant wide aperture should give a good low-light performance. The optical stabilization and fast autofocus are also ideal for video use. In addition, the new lens fits well with existing SIGMA 14-24mm F2.8 DG DN | Art and 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art lenses. Combined, the trio gives you a zoom range from 14 mm to 200 mm, all with a constant F2.8 aperture. As soon as we hear more details about the SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports lens we will update you.

Pricing and availability

SIGMA says that the new 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports lens will be available in December 2023. The company has not revealed any details of pricing yet.
